terryandcarolthompsonTomorrow (July 21) night's mid-week Bible study and prayer time is taking a format change so we can spend an evening at the church meeting/getting reacquainted with Terry and Carol Thompson.

Westside has supported Terry and Carol since they first went to the mission field. Today, Terry is the director of Gospel Mission of South America.  If the name "Thompson" and "missionary" rings another bell for you it should.  Terry and Carol are the parents of Dan Thompson - the same Dan and Liz Thompson that we support as missionaries in Chile.

We are looking forward to a wonderful evening with these two dedicated and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.  Please join us at 7:30pm tomorrow night for a time of blessing and refreshments.

Dear Team Canada,

2 Corinthians 5: 18- 19 “All this is from God who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ not counting men’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”

As I write this message Canada is at a moment of historic proportions. Today in Winnipeg the federal government through the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions is beginning to hear survivor stories of the First Nations and Inuit peoples that went through the ill fated residential school systems. The century and a half of government and church run school systems, however well intentioned by the founders, became for thousands of people a place of loneliness, separation, segregation and worst of all abuse. The process of “assimilations” became one of separation and worse, alienation; alienation from families, from land, from cultures, from language and alienation from a sense of belonging.

Truth is important but what is far more important is the reconciliation. Canada needs to heal from this episode of shame and hurt. I do believe that many of the good people running these schools have no guilt to atone for but many do. These are the ones that chose to abuse already uprooted, dislocated, innocent children. These children had no say in the matter; no power what so ever. The results have been that 150,000 plus children who have lost a connectedness to their souls anchor in our culture. Jesus said let the little children come to me and He obviously includes the first nation’s children as well as the ones of His day.

The answer is not revisionist history. The truth on all sides must come out. Yet past all that there must be forgiveness. Two years ago Prime Minster Harper asked for forgiveness on the part of the government and peoples. Last week First Nations leaders gave their official and national acceptance of the apology and gave forgiveness. This is an important, vital and historic beginning but what we need as a nation and as people is reconciliation.

God has given to us the ministry of reconciliation to Him through Christ. Much of the rhetoric of the alienation and abuse has centered on the church’s actions through the residential school program. We know that true reconciliation comes through Christ alone and His work on the cross to heal the pain and death of separation and alienation. We must pray that the First Nations and Inuit Canadian peoples can respond to God’s presence and light even through the dark shadows cast by the “Church”. As AGC we must ask ourselves how we and our churches demonstrate reconciliation in this hour of opportunity and hope. Can we be ministries of grace and reconciliation to the First Nations and Inuit peoples in the presence of Christ?

God bless you as you pray this month…. and by the way… have a great rest for your souls and bodies this summer.

Blessings,
